Matt Walker and Veronika Widmann have both claimed the British and Italian Downhill National Championship titles respectively, and will now wear the sleeve of their nation’s flag in competition for the following year.
Widmann raced to the win in Piazzatorre, Bergamo and claimed her first Italian Championship victory since 2016, beating Eleonora Farina to the title.
Walker reclaimed his British Downhill Championship title in Rhyd-Y-Felin, Wales edging out Charlie Hatton and Danny Hart for the win.
The victory continues Walker’s impressive record at the one-day, winner-takes-all event. His historic winning streak included the youth title in 2015, junior titles in 2016 and 2017, and the elite men’s title in 2018.
Junior racer Jordan Williams looked set to deliver another superb result, however a red-flag in his race run and a blown-off tyre in his race run ended his chances.
The team will show off their new national champions’ kit at round three of the UCI Downhill World Cup in Maribor, Slovenia on August 14-15.
